Acute Referrals
Medicine
Referrals for same day medical assessment can be referred via the Acute Care Hotline which is available Monday to Friday (0830 - 1630). The referral will be triaged by nurse practitioner who is supported by the medical registrar and on-call consultant. More information about this service can be found here.
Acute Care Hotline: 07500 792 616 (Monday to Friday: 0830 - 1630)
Outside these times, referrals must be directed to the On-Call Medical Registrar:
On-Call Medical Registrar: Bleep 1030 via Lister Switchboard on 01438 759 928
Gynaecology
Gynaecology referrals can often be referred to the Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Emergency Unit (EPU) located at the Woodlands building at Lister Hospital. EPU is staffed by gynaecology specialist nurses, sonographers and there is usually a gynaecology SHO or registrar on-site. Appropriate for pregnant patients below 20 weeks gestation (Maternity Triage if 20 weeks gestation or above).
EPU Contact Number: 01438 28 5128 (see opening times)
On-Call Gynaecology Registrar: Bleep 1377 via Lister Switchboard on 01438 759 928
GPs can refer directly to EPU without gynaecology registrar involvement if a clinically stable pregnant patient has PV bleeding alone without abdominal pain. If there is any suspicion of ectopic pregnancy, the registrar must be contacted in first instance (via switchboard on bleep 1377). Pregnant patients with hyperemesis can be referred to EPU but often GPs are asked to start anti-emetics first (prochlorperazine 5-10mg 6-8 hourly PO and promethazine 12.5-25mg 4-8 hourly PO), or if significant fluid balance concerns, may need to attend A&E directly. Non-pregnant patients with PV bleeding or pelvic pain warranting admission will need to be discussed with the registrar first. Bartholin's abscesses can be drained in EPU but the registrar will need to be aware of these before attendance.
Obstetrics
Pregnant patients over 20 weeks gestation are aware to contact Maternity Triage (situated in the Consultant-Led Unit of Lister Hospital) if there are any pregnancy concerns. Patients have access to emergency assessment here 24/7, every day of the year. There is a dedicated phone number for both self-referrals and clinician/midwife referrals:
Maternity Triage: 01438 28 6168 (24/7 access)
Orthopaedics
Fractures requiring urgent orthopaedic review can be discussed with the T&O registrar on-call. Further information about the referral process can be found here.

Paediatrics
If a paediatric patient requires urgent same-day assessment in the Child Assessment Unit (CAU), the On-Call Paediatric Registrar must be contacted in first instance:
On-Call Paediatric Registrar: Bleep 1080 via Lister Switchboard on 01438 759 928
Often patients can be discussed via the GP Heralded Service which has been set-up for GPs to discuss cases which may be appropriate for the outpatient setting such as the paediatric rapid access clinic. This service is facilitated by a paediatric consultant who can offer general advice clinical concerns. More information about this service can be found here.
